The SOF Sniper certification is an advanced qualification available to operators within MSOT 8213 – Task Force Raven. This certification represents mastery of long-range marksmanship, reconnaissance, and observation skills to support special operations missions.

It is modeled after the SOCOM Special Operations Sniper Course (SOTIC) and expands the capabilities of the Designated Marksman (DM) billet.


Responsibilities

  • Deliver precision fires at extended ranges (800m–1200m+).
  • Conduct reconnaissance and surveillance in support of MSOT operations.
  • Provide detailed intelligence through observation logs and reporting formats.
  • Act as overwatch during direct action missions.
  • Train other operators in advanced marksmanship and optics use.
  • Advise leadership on terrain, engagement ranges, and observation positions.

Training Required


Skills & Capabilities

  • Precision engagement of targets at extreme ranges (800m–1200m+).
  • Mastery of wind calls, ballistics, and environmental effects.
  • Competence with spotting optics, ballistic calculators, and rangefinders.
  • Ability to construct and conceal hides and observation posts (OPs).
  • Expertise in SALUTE and SPOTREP reporting.
  • Integration with JTAC and fire support elements for target designation.

Equipment

  • Advanced sniper rifle system (bolt-action or semi-auto, long-range).
  • High-magnification optics (10x+ with ballistic reticle).
  • Spotting scope, laser rangefinder, ballistic computer.
  • Camouflage netting or ghillie suit for concealment.
  • Observation logbooks, notepad, and map tools.

Training Course

Module 1 – Advanced Ballistics

  • External ballistics and environmental effects.
  • Wind reading and correction methods.
  • Scope adjustment and ballistic calculator usage.

Module 2 – Long-Range Marksmanship

  • Precision engagement at 800m–1200m+.
  • Target discrimination and priority selection.
  • Timed long-range engagement drills.

Module 3 – Fieldcraft & Observation

  • Camouflage and concealment techniques.
  • Construction of hides and OPs.
  • Maintaining observation logs under field conditions.

Module 4 – Reconnaissance & Integration

  • SALUTE and SPOTREP formats for target reporting.
  • Coordination with JTAC for target marking.
  • Overwatch integration during MSOT assaults.

Graduation Criteria

  • Accurately engages targets beyond 800m with consistency.
  • Demonstrates effective observation and reporting.
  • Completes a field exercise requiring reconnaissance and precision overwatch.

Advancement

After earning SOF Sniper certification, operators may advance to:

  • Sniper Team Leader roles.
  • Instructor cadre for sniper training.
  • Integration into higher-echelon SOF sniper/recce elements.
